Robert Friedman  is a graduate of Columbia College, where he started his writing career as the Editor-in-Chief of The Columbia Daily Spectator and co-author of Up Against the Ivy Wall, a book about the 1968 student protests at Columbia. He also has an M.A. in American literature from Columbia University. And he has been an adjunct professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

Robert Friedman  is a graduate of Columbia College, where he started his writing career as the Editor-in-Chief of The Columbia Daily Spectator and co-author of Up Against the Ivy Wall, a book about the 1968 student protests at Columbia. He also has an M.A. in American literature from Columbia University. And he has been an adjunct professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

Prior to joining Fortune in 2000, he was an Assistant Managing Editor of Life magazine, where he was in charge of international and medical coverage. He also edited six special issues of Life and two books, The Beatles: From Yesterday to Today (Bulfinch, 1996) and The LIFE Millennium: The 100 Most Important Events and People of the Past 1,000 Years (Bulfinch, 1998).

Mr. Friedman was Special Projects Editor at New York Newsday from 1986-95, overseeing a team of reporters that produced many award-winning series and investigations. Before that, he was the editor of The Village Voice; a staff reporter at The Wall Street Journal, where he covered legal and media issues; a freelance writer for Esquire, Inside Sports, Rolling Stone, New York, American Heritage, and other magazines; and the editor of MORE, a magazine about the media.

As the International Editor of Fortune, which he served for seven years, he was in charge of the magazine's Europe and Asia editions, as well as its global business coverage. He edited special issues on China and India, two countries of which he has tremendous insight.
