Ray has one of the most outstanding playing records of any goalkeeper in the world, having played for England on 61 occasions and he captained the team at Wembley. Ray was with Liverpool for 14 years where he won 5 League Championships, 3 European Cups, 2 UEFA Cups, 2 FA Cups, 1 Super Cup, 1 League Cup and 7 charity shields. His success continued at Tottenham with a further FA cup and UEFA Cup.

Ray moved on to coaching when he retired from the professional game in 1998.  He was a key member of Sven-Goran Eriksson's England coaching team.  He  remains part of the England backroom staff under manager Fabio Capello.

He is also the head of the FA's Development Team, overseeing the England under 16s, 17s, 18s, 19s and 20 sides, working with England U21 coach Stuart Pearce.

With his wealth of knowledge and experience of the game, he is regularly invited to appear on Sky Sports, Channel 4 & 5, Eurosport and Commercial Radio to summarise and co-commentate on major football matches.

Ray has a vibrant and charming personality and mixes well with people of all ages and backgrounds. He is a popular choice as a motivational speaker at corporate events.
